We recommend participants purchase travel insurance when making travel plans; and, although health insurance is not a requirement for entry into Panama, it is highly recommended.
Since each country offers different travel insurance plans, we suggest a policy that has both COVID-19 AND trip cancellation language, such as “cancel for any reason.” Terminology such as this will protect against the rare chance of cancellation.
For US-based travelers, reasonably priced travel insurance that complies with Panama regulations can be found with Trawick Travel Insurance. We encourage you to shop around.
Panama is constantly changing their travel regulations. By the time our course begins in January 2022, it is very likely protocols to enter the country will become less stringent.
Panama is currently open to international travelers from all countries. In keeping with maintaining the safety and health of both tourists and locals, however, a negative COVID-19 test is required for entry for non-vaccinated travelers.
Non-vaccinated travelers arriving from or that have transited through High-Risk countries in the last 15 days will be required to quarantine for 72 hours in a hotel — the traveler is responsible for 100% of the cost of the stay.
Travelers arriving from High-Risk countries who can present a complete vaccination scheme, equal to or greater than 14 days after the last dose, will be exempt from the 72-hour quarantine.
Click the Entry Requirements link to learn more about travel to Panama, including the High-Risk countries list.
Bocas Town, Isla Colon, the location of Bird Island Bungalows, currently has no restrictions because there are almost no cases of COVID-19. Bocas Town is a secluded beach town with a very relaxed and easy-going quality of life. In taxis and public transportation, masks are to be worn.

Additionally, temperature screenings will be conducted at check-in.
We ask that students honor each other in this space during the first few days of acclimating to our new surroundings and new neighbors and respectfully maintain your distance 6 feet apart from others.
More importantly, practice awareness, consideration, and compassion with each other. This includes washing and disinfecting your hands before and after meals, and according to best hygiene practices.
